What’s in your sunscreen, filter by filter

Every sunscreen on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, with each active ingredient and its percentage, straight from its ARTG entry. Search a brand, tick what you want to avoid, and see how each one sits against the limits the TGA has proposed for homosalate, oxybenzone and 4-MBC.

Keep using sunscreen. The TGA says its benefits far outweigh any risks, and nothing here says a product is unsafe: the limits are proposals.

356 of 938

sunscreens on the register list homosalate as an active.

  • Every one is above all three of the TGA’s proposed limits (0.28%, 0.68% and 2.7%)
  • 12 of 63 kids’ and baby sunscreens contain it
  • 27 list oxybenzone and 94 list 4-MBC

Today’s homosalate maximum is 15%. Interim decision due by the end of 2026.

  • Within at or under the proposed limit
  • Depends on use under it, but the option only covers face and hand (or adult) products
  • Above over it

A flag compares the product’s percentage with each option the TGA has put out for comment. Two of the three homosalate options only exempt face and hand products, and one only adult ones, so a body sunscreen can be over an option even with a small amount. The options in full.

How much homosalate, product by product

Most sunscreens that list homosalate have far more than any of the proposed limits would allow: the TGA’s options run from 0.28% to 2.7%, and the register allows up to 15% today. If the limits go ahead, these are the products that would change.

Where the TGA’s review is up to

  1. Safety reviews of the seven actives and of benzophenone are published. Five actives need no change; the TGA proposes limits on homosalate and oxybenzone, and a cap on benzophenone, which can form as sunscreen ages. TGA

  2. Public consultation opens on three options each for homosalate and oxybenzone. It closes on 12 August 2025. TGA

  3. Consultation opens on 4-MBC: two TGA options (0.39%, or face and hand products only) and a ban proposed by two private applicants. It closes on 12 October 2026. TGA

  4. Interim decision on homosalate, oxybenzone and benzophenone, published for comment. If limits go ahead, products get a set time to change. TGA

After that: By the end of 2026, interim decision on homosalate, oxybenzone and benzophenone, published for comment. If limits go ahead, products get a set time to change.

Questions people ask

Which sunscreens contain homosalate in Australia?

On the register today, 356 of the 938 sunscreens we list name homosalate as an active ingredient. Tick "No homosalate" in the table to see the rest, or open the homosalate page for every product that has it, with its percentage.

Is homosalate banned in Australia?

No. Listed sunscreens can contain up to 15% homosalate today. The TGA has proposed three lower limits and will publish an interim decision for comment by the end of 2026. Nothing changes for a product until a final decision and the transition time that comes with it.

If my sunscreen is above a proposed limit, should I stop using it?

The TGA says to keep using sunscreen: its benefits far outweigh any risks, and the proposed limits are a precaution based on animal studies at high doses. If you’d rather avoid an ingredient, the table shows products without it. For advice about your own skin, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Where do the percentages come from?

From the TGA’s own register. Every listed sunscreen has an ARTG entry, and its public summary gives each active ingredient in mg per gram, which we turn into a percentage (100 mg/g is 10%). Each product page links to its ARTG entry and says when we read it.

Why isn’t my sunscreen in the table?

Shop names often differ from register names, so search for the brand or the SPF. Moisturisers and make-up with SPF may be cosmetics rather than therapeutic sunscreens, which keeps them off the register. If a sunscreen with an AUST L number is missing, email us and we’ll add it.
